School Mascots And What They Mean

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

Mascots are commonly used to promote school spirit. These symbols and images give students an image to relate to when they think of their school and their teams. Mascots are more than the animal or person painted on the side of the school house building.

For the longest time these symbols have been used to represent opposing sides, whether it be governmentally or just for competitions sake, mascots have been used. Some of the most common mascots like the elephant to represent republicans, or the donkey to represent the democrats mean more than just a division between two sides. One could arguably say that the elephant represents wisdom and the donkey represents moronic behaviors. This of course is a generalization but theses symbols give people spirit.

The same effect is seen in schools. For example when cheer leaders chant they do not say the name of the school necessarily, they chant the name of the school mascots. These are symbols of respect, and can even be seen as representations of how fierce the opposing school teams can be.

For example, if you were on the high school basket ball team, it would be easy to think that a team called the honey bees would be an easy win, however, if you take the same players and match them against a team called the lions there is a bit of a psychological impact on students.

Not only are these simple representations of the school something that determines the school colors, they give students something to relate to. On school teams the mascot becomes a part of who you are. These become something that students relate to and identify with. Similar to the army, navy, or marines, all of its members identify with who they have become by singing up with the program.

This figure can also mean more than just team spirit. Some times these are indicative of time periods and current events during the time the building was constructed. Pursuing this further, it is easy to understand why a prison building turned school house would be called, freedom. Sometimes schools are named after big figures in history, for example, there are several school names Martin Luther King Jr. High, or other schools that may be named after presidents and such. Many times there are schools that get their name and mascot from a person who helped to build, and fund the production of the building its self.

Although it is uncommon, some schools do not have a symbol like others may have. Many schools like musical conservatoires do not have one because their major focus is on musical theory and such, many private schools are also known to be without a symbol to represent themselves. The reason behind this is due to the fact that many private schools operate under the ideas of a specific religion, which becomes the institutions name; the names of saints or religious figures can be turned into a symbol of representation but it may just be a little too awkward of a situation.

Mascots are identifiable, they are symbols people relate with, they are what students and parents put their faith in during major sporting events. These symbols are what represent the schools and the time periods they were build in. Theses symbols represent the school in one simple word, phrase, or animal.

Lodge and Fishing Vacation For Groups of Friends

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Many people begin to plan their summer trips during the long winter months. Today, more people are taking family friendly trips that everyone can enjoy. Something like a lodge and fishing vacation would be ideal for a family that likes to be outdoors and commune with nature more than stand in line for a ride or go site seeing in a big city.

A family of four or more could stay comfortably in a cabin near a lake so that they could rise early and fish for their afternoon meal. This is an ideal trip for many families who love to be outdoors and would rather not stay in a tent. More and more cabins are opening up along rivers and lakes where the majority of families and groups of people like to stay but don’t want to ‘rough it’ too badly.

Many of the modern day cabins have all the conveniences of home such as a full kitchen, a bathroom that doesn’t require a flashlight, a real bed and a television in some cases. Most people enjoy the cabins because they like to have a private bathroom and want to be able to sleep in real beds. There is also the fact that they are cooking on actual size stoves and using refrigeration rather than a cooler or the lake to keep cold foods cold.

When a cabin is situated near the lake or river, it is only a short walk to begin a trip for fish, either fly fish or boating for dinner fish. A lot of people are taking young children to cabins and lakes in order to teach them to fish so that they will grow up enjoying the sport. In addition, they will have a skill they will be able to rely on if they ever get lost in the wilderness.

With a trip for the entire family in the woods or near a river, it is a great opportunity to teach the children how to swim and not be afraid of the water. Many children who grow up in the city or areas where there is no water or pools grow up to be adults who can not swim and are afraid of the water. Taking children out to fish and on a boat or even just to stand in or near the river banks is a good thing to help them over come any fears of water.

Something for the teens and older children in the family to learn from a trip into the wilderness would be how to clean the fish for dinner. Helping to prepare the family meal of fish is a great opportunity for the kids to pitch in and lean a helping hand. They will need to be supervised with a sharp knife; however, they will enjoy the responsibility of helping out with such a task.

With staying in a cabin, several families could pool their money and rent a larger cabin that might accommodate two or four families and have pull-out couches and extra bedrooms. This was they families would all share the cooking and cleaning duties in addition to having a family fun night or two of movies or board games. And the families could split up and fish or swim or hike and bike along the trails. There would be enough adults to supervise the kids in whatever they wanted to do.

A lodge and fishing vacation is much more economical than a sight-seeing trip to a big city or an amusement park style trip for a family of four or more. Hotels are very expensive and the meals alone would cost more than a few nights in a cabin near a river where the fish are plentiful and make great dinners and lunches. Additionally, everyone could take turns making their favorite meal which is cheaper than going out to eat every day.

Getting Friends Involved in Recreation

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Believe it or not recreation does happen in the nursing room. The nurses want the patients to feel that they have to move around in their wheelchairs or walking down to the sitting area to play games or sing or whatever kind of fun things they would do.

Recreation does not have to be anything physical as long as you’re moving certain parts of your body like your hands or feet. Especially with the elderly the nurses would not want to just lie around in bed all day. If they can walk, they would need to get up and walk every so often until they get tired. Recreation is a different meaning for the elderly, and it can also be a different meaning for the younger generation as well.

As long as you’re moving your body then you would be doing recreation as least as long as you are elderly you would be. It’s the physical therapist job to make sure that you are moving and if you’re in a wheelchair, it’s good for you to get some tennis shoes on and try to start walking so you can get some physical exercise and get out of the wheelchair.

It’s also a good thing to exercise your mind especially when you’re at that age. Most nursing homes, if not all, have games they offer to get the patients to think a little bit. It never hurts; it only makes them stronger. Their’s usually bingo they have every so often. It not only gets them to look for the numbers or letters when they hear it called out, but it’s a fun way to get your mind working.

Some men and women may be able to get up from their bed and walk down to the sitting area to play cards. Playing cards also gets your mind working because that involves a lot of thinking too. Plus you’re not only going to be using your mind, you’re also going to be using your body to walk down. Even if you’re in a wheelchair you may still be moving your body because you might be moving your arms to move the wheelchair.

Sitting outside is nice especially on a nice day, but it’s also very boring unless you’re doing something out there to get your body to move every once in awhile like knitting for example. If you would want to, you could move yourself in your wheelchair up and down the path when you go outside. People may think you’re crazy especially the nurses, but it helps all the blood to flow properly through your body as long as you’re moving.

As well as people in the nursing homes people in the elderly apartments, where you have to be sixty-two to get in, also need help and they have fun things for them to do there as well. They just don’t need as much help as people in nursing homes. Most apartments like these have exercise equipment so not only are you staying physical but you’re keeping your body healthy as well. Plus more than likely they will have a swimming pool so you can do either aerobics or swim laps to stay physical.

It may seem as if recreation should not involve elderly people because most of them can’t really go outside and do things for themselves, but it should because they are also moving their body. That should be a part of it by allowing them to move and work their mind because when you’re that age that’s something you kind of have to do especially if you want your body to corporate and get better.

Mascots and Why They Are Important

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

What are mascots and why are they so important to sports teams and schools? A mascot is anything from a person to an object. They are thought to bring good luck and help boost school spirit. Custom mascots outfits can be bought or even made.

A mascots role at sporting events is to get the crowd in the spirit of the game. Most people think that a person just puts on a suit and jumps around and acts silly. There are actually training camps for them so that they can learn what to do in order to get the sports fans into the spirit of the game.

They play a large role when it comes to professional sports, high schools, and colleges. However you may not know this but mascots are also used for companies. Their job is to bring the energy level of the crowd up. Sports teams play better when they have fans cheering them on.

When a mascot starts dancing and acting silly the crowds go wild. Some people even go to sporting events just to watch them perform. Most of them have a signature move that they do at all their performances and this really gets the crowds going. The reason they have a training camp is because the mascot has to learn how to communicate with the crowd without being able to talk.

The camps teach them how to use gestures such as I can’t hear you. The mascot has to know how to communicate with the crowd so that they can have a non verbal conversation with the crowd. The school or sports team mascot is very important to the organization that it is representing.

There are some schools or sports teams that use actual real animals as mascots. Some people like these but personally I like the people dressed up in the mascot outfit. They are usually very funny and they interact with the fans which gets the fans fired up for the game.

There are places that will make custom mascots outfits or you can just buy one online. If you have a bee as a mascot then the outfit has to be a bee. If you have a lion or bear then the outfit has to be a lion or bear. Some schools even use insects as their schools mascot.

If you are using one for a business it is a great way to promote your business. They can be used for a number of different things. If you are promoting something for children then you will want to choose one that children can relate to. Most children love dogs so you could use a dog or even a bunny rabbit.

When choosing one you have to keep in mind the type of person you are trying to draw in with it. For example if you are opening a store that sells appliances then you might want to have one that is dressed like one of the many appliances to draw in customers.

Five Ways to Wear a Basic Men’s T-Shirt

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

The basic men’s t-shirt is a simple part of any outfit. The shirt is adaptable for a wide variety of looks despite the fact that it is a plain shirt. When considering a basic t-shirt, it is important to keep in mind that the shirt does not have designs and is only one colour so the same shirt can adapt to various outfits without clashing due to the print or design.

Shirt and Jeans:

The classic casual look for the weekend, college classes or even just lounging around the house is the basic t-shirt and jeans ensemble. The plain basic t-shirts in colours like white, grey, black, red or blue is a perfect accompaniment to that pair of jeans. Whether the jeans are washed out with holes for a grubby rocker look or have a professional dark wash, it looks perfect paired with a basic shirt. Add a pair of casual shoes and socks to complete the look.

Shirt and Shorts:

During the spring and summer months, jeans are simply too hot for that casual look. Instead, change out the jeans for a pair of shorts. Khaki or denim shorts are great neutral options to match any t-shirt colour. The plain t-shirt colour dresses down the outfit with a simple style that defines the warm months. Pair the shirt with shorts in a darker shade of the same colour or work on contrasting colours to change up the look. Wear a pair of sandals or flip-flops rather than shoes to create the ultimate in summer comfort.

Dressing Up With a Cardigan:

For a slightly more formal look, the basic t-shirts look amazing when partially covered up with a cardigan. Select a cardigan in a colour that contrasts or complements the shirt. Complementing colours might include red or blue with a black cardigan, while contrasting colours would include grey or white with the same black cardigan. Take care when working with coloured shirts and sweaters to avoid clashing. For the best look, leave the cardigan unbuttoned to show the shirt beneath.

Rebel Style:

Instead of a cardigan, create a rebel style by pairing that basic t-shirt with a leather jacket. Whether the jacket is a biker style or a bomber style, it will look amazing with a white or grey shirt peeking out. For a complete rebel look, finish the outfit with a pair of jeans and boots. This style is semi-casual without the extremity of a simple pair of shorts or jeans without covering the shirt.

Chinos:

The basic shirt paired with cotton chinos is another great look. Chinos are available in a wide range of colours, but have a lighter material than jeans. Colours can include khaki, stone, navy, maroon, and more. The light cotton material changes the look while the use of contrasting colours or complementing colours of the shirt make the outfit look stylish.

Men’s t-shirts are durable and changeable to fit the mood and style of any individual. It can dress down an outfit for a semi-casual creation.
