3 Must See Sights in Palma

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

The beautiful Spanish Balearic Island of Majorca has long been a favourite with families on their annual holidays. Not only does the island have a wonderfully temperate, year-round climate, it also has a fantastic infrastructure in place for tourism. Majorca family holidays can be all things to all people: relaxing and rejuvenating or exciting and action-packed. But most of all, a holiday to Majorca will be family-friendly and fun.

Palma, the Balearic’s capital, is Majorca’s busiest port and close to half the island’s population calls it home. It is popular as a holiday destination with the Spanish as well as tourists on their Majorca family holidays. Here in the bustling port city one can experience diverse facets of authentic Spanish life, and there is something to keep everyone happy no matter what they are looking for from their visit; even Spain’s royal family return time and again for their holidays.

Castillo de Bellver

One of the most picturesque local attractions is the beautifully preserved Castillo de Bellver. The castle sits elegantly on a hill where it has presided over Palma for almost 700 years. Surrounded by a moat, and on two levels, the castle has the honour of being the only completely circular castle in Spain. Originally built as a royal summer residence, it was reincarnated as a prison for several centuries and there are still remnants of the prisoner’s ancient graffiti which adorns the walls. With children in tow in Majorca, family holidays are the ideal time to expose them to some culture, and the history and intriguing architecture of this fascinating castle will appeal to even the youngsters.

Gothic Cathedral

Even from the sea, the most prominent and striking building in Palma is the exquisite Gothic Cathedral. One cannot help but be impressed, not only by the size of the building, but by the intricate craftsmanship which makes up what surely must be the most elegant silhouette on Majorca. Family holidays to the city would not be complete without a visit to the cathedral and a stroll around its stunning interior. The kids will love exploring the pillars, arches and secret alcoves, and the parents will love the twisted tales of a construction which spanned a period of four centuries.

Banys Arabs (Arab Baths)

Even if you just visit Palma on a day trip on your Majorca family holidays, you should definitely include the Arab Baths on your agenda. One of the city’s more secret attractions, the baths date bath to the 10th century and are all that is left of the ancient Arab city, Medina Mayurqa. The half dome of the ‘tepedarium’ has 25 shafts down which sunlight pours, illuminating the baths. The dome is supported by a dozen columns and upon close inspection it becomes clear that each is unique. It is thought that, in an early example of recycling, the columns were originally part of various Roman buildings. The tranquil surrounds are a wonderful place to escape the busy city, and the children will love the enclosed courtyard which is filled with cactus, palms and orange trees.

A Family Holiday to Fethiye

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

When planning family holidays, Turkey instantly springs to mind as a contender. There is so much to see and do and whether you choose to holiday in the exotic capital Istanbul, or opt for a more relaxing stay in a coastal resort, family holidays to Turkey will never disappoint. One of the best things about Turkey is its accessibility and no matter where you stay, even those with young families will find it easy to explore the neighbouring areas. Olu Deniz is one of the most popular family resorts in the Aegean and an ideal place to base yourself; and if you do find yourself there on your family holidays, Turkey has another little secret up her sleeve – Fethiye.

Fethiye is only a short distance from the more popular resorts along the Turkish coast, but some people prefer its more relaxed atmosphere for their family holidays. Turkey is renowned for its hospitality and the warm welcome it extends to visitors, and nowhere is this more evident than Fethiye. Whilst retaining an authentic and traditional feel, there is still enough to do to keep the entire family entertained. Whether your family is into sun-worshipping and sailing, or history and horse-riding, Fethiye can take care of everyone.

Along the Waterfront

You may choose to spend your entire family holiday on the beach and in Fethiye, the temptation to do just that is extremely great! Although sunbathing and swimming will be high on the agenda of family holidays, Turkey offers more than just a dip in the sea and a paddle in the shallows. Around Fethyie you will discover not only some of the most stunning beaches on the Turkish Coast, you will also find some of the most enjoyable ways to maximise your fun in the sun. Diving, snorkelling, kayaking and paragliding are just some of the activities on offer and, coupled with the wide sandy beaches and warm inviting waters, are an irresistible option.

Of course, if parents want to escape for a little ‘me time’ on their family holidays in Turkey, they can always leave the kids to their own devices and take a relaxing stroll around the harbour in Fethiye. With a charming backdrop of bobbing yachts against the glittering azure ocean, you can while away an afternoon or an evening in a tiny restaurant and watch the locals go about their business.

Delve into History

In its day, Fethiye was one of the most significant towns on the Lycian Way. Formerly namedTelmessos, it was the centre of prophecy and a bustling centre of culture. Wherever you base yourself for your family holidays, Turkey will astound you with a diverse and rich tapestry of history and Fethiye is no exception. The entire family can enjoy excursions to visit the many fascinating relics dotted around the town. A history lesson can take on a whole new meaning when you get to experience the actual site of such important events, and you will have no trouble getting the children to come along. Of particular interest in Fethiye is the amazing rock tomb of Amyntas with its impressive facade cut into the hillside behind the town; as well as many other smaller sarcophagi in the unique Lycian style which date back to the 4th Century.

Sunshine in Soller

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

There’s every chance that on your Majorca family holidays, you will have your hands full with excitable children chomping at the bit to have as many adventures as possible. They’ll be raring to go, whether it’s straight down to the beach or into the wild. So, to help you to cope with their energy, why not take them to what Santiago Rusinol named ‘The Port of Calm’ – the beautiful coastal town of Porto Soller.

Taking Them to Dizzy New Heights

Known as the gateway to the Tramuntana Mountains, Soller is surrounded by landscapes that are perfect for wearing out the kids and making sure they get a good night’s sleep. This rugged mountain range provides some spectacular scenery for the adults, as well as some incredible excursions for the younger family members, making it the perfect place to head to on Majorca family holidays. Whether you want to traverse some of the Tramuntana paths on foot, or hire a bike and try it on two wheels, there are plenty of mountain trails that are not too challenging or remote. However far you decide to go up the mountain, you’ll be rewarded with phenomenal views of the coastline, and wide open spaces where the kids can let loose and stretch their legs. So get them out into the sunshine, and a trip into the Tramuntana Mountains will guarantee you a nice quiet evening as they’ll have worn themselves out with all that exploring.

Take to the Water

With the town of Puerto Soller sitting on some of Majorca’s most amazing coastline, it is unsurprising that there is a wealth of water activity just waiting for you. If the sun is shining, start out from the beautiful beach of Playa d’en Repic, and you will be able to hire kayaks to take you out exploring the sea for the day. Double or single kayaks can be hired, allowing the kids a little more independence should they desire it, whilst allowing the parents to take a boat trip together. Most kayaking trips aim for the island of s’Illeta – a small island found about 4 kilometres from Playa d’en Repic. En route to s’Illeta you will pass some fascinating rock formations and caves, giving you the chance to get a geography lesson into your Majorca family holidays. You might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin or two along the way. On reaching the island, the adults will be awestruck by the enormous colony of cormorants that has made its home there, whilst children can be kept easily entertained by paddling into the Vell Mari – an unusually large cave over 500 yards deep. But if you’re going to be out on the water all day, be sure to take plenty of sun cream with you.

Take a Ride on the Railway

After all that activity, both you and the children might just want to slow down the pace of your Majorca family holidays a little. If this is the case, sit back and relax as you take a ride on the infamous Soller railway train. The traditional wooden train dates back to 1912 and connects the sleepy town of Soller with the larger resort of Palma Mallorca. The journey will take you through rolling hills and beautiful countryside, and on a sunny, clear day you will be able to see for miles, before arriving in Palma Mallorca where you can spend the afternoon shopping and seeing the sights.

Taking Majorca family holidays can result in a great deal of excitement and use a great deal of energy. Sunny Soller is the ideal location to expend this energy in a peaceful and quiet resort. Away from the hustle and bustle of busier resorts, Porto Soller is surrounded by beautiful countryside and beach where you can explore, but also relax.

Budapest For Lovers

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

In my line of work you get to meet a lot of people from all walks of life. I love the way that one day I can be driving from Budapest airport to city hotels with a young couple on their honeymoon; and another day I can be transporting a load of young men here in my beautiful city for a weekend of high jinx. But no matter who I’m driving, I always like to tailor my routes to their accommodation depending on the part of the city I think would appeal most to them. I’ve been doing this for a lot of years now, so I know Budapest like the back of my hand. There are loads of short cuts, long cuts and quite a few, just-for-the-sake-of-it cuts! I have to admit though, I’m a bit of an old romantic and my favourite passengers are the ones clearly in love; and for them, I have a very special route…

Margaret Island

Although we can’t strictly drive right past this on our Budapest Airport to city route, I always point it out as a place for young (and not so young) lovers to go. Margaret Island is a 2km long island set in the middle of the Danube which separates the two sides of the city. It has a lovely calming atmosphere and you can either stroll through the landscaped garden admiring the profusion of flowers; or simply sit quietly in one of the bars with a cocktail and watch the world go by. But the most romantic way to see the entire island is to hire a pedal carriage and cycle at your leisure along the beautifully kept paths and walkways.

Szechenyi Thermal Bath

I always tell my clients looking for romance about this amazing place. It is fabulous for relaxing and unwinding after a day spent sightseeing, and I actually even had one elderly gentleman and lady ask me to take them there on their way back to Budapest Airport! To city workers and tourists, these thermal baths are a haven of comfort and relaxation, and the decor of the building itself is worth the visit alone. Its neo-classic silhouette presides over three outdoor thermal pools complete with fountains and marble statues. It is a wonderful place for lovers to go and drift lazily in the warm, tranquil waters before an early evening stroll along the river.

A Candlelit River Cruise

If I’m driving people at night on the Budapest Airport to city route, the first thing they see as we near the centre is the beautiful Danube River. It is truly the most stunning aspect of the city, dividing the two sides neatly in half. In my opinion, the ultimate romantic thing to do on a visit to Budapest is to go on a candlelit dinner cruise with the one you love. I have recommended so many couples to do this because I know from personal experience how lovely it is. Every year, on our anniversary, my wife and I take the same cruise along the Danube and every year we agree; our beautiful city just gets better and better.

These are just three of my favourite romantic ideas for a visit to Budapest, but in reality, the entire city is built on romance and you cannot escape her magical spell. Viva l’amore.

THE CARIBBEAN – A PLACE OF ISLANDS

In the Caribbean Sea the West Indies has archipelago of more than 7000 tropical islands. But the luxury hotels and the resorts have made the vacations in Caribbean a well-liked place for all the honeymooners and the retirees a long back. The backpacking and the eco-tourism options have made independent travelers also love it. Weather in Caribbean is almost mild over the entire year; many kinds of all inclusive Caribbean packages and airfares are available; and there is an option of 100′s of islands available to choose between them.

Islands in the Caribbean such as Barbados, Aruba, and Cayman out of many are comparatively warm and very flat. Certain other islands, including Hispaniola, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, and Puerto Rico mark rugged and high mountain ranges alongside of a cool and brisk weather. Even though the climates in all the islands are tropical, weather varies among the different islands because of geography, currents and oceans, and trade winds which blow from east has the effect of creating rain-shadow effects upon the islands which are mountainous. The group of diverse ecosystems are been supported by the diverse climate conditions on the Caribbean islands, which may include the range from Montana cloud forest to cactus scrublands. The weather in winter is dry and warm. Caribbean vacations can be hampered by the season having hurricanes in the time of late summer until the beginning of fall.

Deforestation has been a problem over the hundreds of years for the cause of human settlement, there also exist different kinds of species of birds, mammals, and reptiles which has considered to be nature preserves and threatened species.

Originally, Arawak Indians inhabited the Caribbean islands; they were then invaded by a Carib aggressive tribe. Waves of invaders were seen in 16th to 18th centuries from Portugal, France, Holland, Spain, and England populated these islands, which were the picture of several different and important battles and also the pirate gangs’ lair. The number of American Indians was decreased due to war and disease, however, introduction to slaves of Africa and European immigration were responsible for a huge population growth. The waves of immigrants from India and China arrived in the 19th century enlarging the population around 30 million at the current date. Africans (Igbo, Yoruba, Akan, and Kongo), Asian (Indian and Chinese), American Indians (Taino, Arawak, and Caribs) together with European descendants are the ethnic groups are the main reasons for more population. Around 13 sovereign nations are there among the islands and there are also 2 overseas colonies along with 14 dependent territories.

Off the southeast and southern coasts of Florida, the Greater Antilles are been located, and are also formed through 4 important islands, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Hispaniola, and Jamaica (which is further divided on the eastern side of the island as Dominican Republic and on the west as Hati). Well thought-out as a part of this group is the Cayman Islands. Caribbean all inclusive group containing all the smaller islands are the Lesser Antilles which outlines an arc between the Greater Antilles and the northern coast of South America. The most popular and famous islands of the number of islands available are Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Anguilla, Martinique, Aruba, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Martin, Virgin, and the Trinidad and Tobago Islands.

VACATIONS IN CARIBBEAN

Bahamas

In Bahamas you feel like heaven is much closer than what you had imagined. Off the coast of Florida you can even find a piece of heaven, in the Bahamas islands. A magical collaboration of laid-back island attitude and the British Colonial formality can be discovered in the midst of a chain of seven hundred tiny islands.

Jamaica

Jamaica is also called as an island for everyone, which provides its visitors a wide range from the exciting mountains which is enclosed by rainforest to the sandy white beaches. Beat of Reggae is the one thing that must not be missed by anyone. Jamaica can be enjoyed the most by residing at anyone of the classy amazing resorts.

Curacao

It is a little difficult for people to locate Curacao on the map just because that’s how they needed to keep it. Anyways Curacao is situated on the coast of Southern Caribbean Venezuela. This is a small undiscovered gem and however it still carries its dignity of charming Dutch influence.
